About SSY (Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana) Calculator
Guide1What is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY)?
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) is a government-backed savings scheme launched under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign to promote the welfare of the girl child in India. It offers one of the highest interest rates among small savings schemes and comes with EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax benefits.
The account can be opened for a girl child below 10 years of age by a parent or legal guardian. It matures after 21 years from the date of opening or upon the girl's marriage after turning 18.
2Key Features of SSY
- Interest Rate: Government-set quarterly (currently around 8.2% p.a., among the highest in small savings)
- Investment Limit: Minimum ₹250 and maximum ₹1,50,000 per financial year
- Deposit Period: Contributions required for the first 14 years; account matures at 21 years
- Tax Benefits: EEE status — deposits qualify for 80C, interest and maturity are tax-free
- Partial Withdrawal: Up to 50% of the balance allowed after the girl turns 18, for education expenses
3SSY Interest Calculation
SSY interest is calculated monthly on the lowest balance between the 5th and end of each month, similar to PPF:
Monthly Interest = Lowest balance (5th to month-end) × r / 12
Interest is compounded annually and credited at the end of each financial year. After the 14-year deposit period, the balance continues to earn interest until maturity at 21 years.
